Have a sense of humor when you sleep walk.

Ok, so I know that I am a sleepwalker. I have known since I was a kid, my mom used to tell me of really weird things that I would, sometimes she would find me looking out the window in the middle of the night, or just standing in a room. I am now 27 and am still an avid sleepwalker. When I am in strange places (hotels, friends, Family, ect..) I tend to really do most of my sleep walking. But I am also an avid talker in my sleep and will just carry on conversations with no one while I am in bed.. laughing ect.

One summer when mom had taken me to the Grand Canyon (I was 18), we rented a cabin about 300ft from the edge of the canyon.. no guard rails, nada.. just open yard and then a drop off. Real safe, right? Well Mom heard a rattling noise and thought someone was trying to break in, but she found out that the opposite was happening.. i was trying to break out of the cabin, it was 2am and she said that I had managed to get the door and the deadbolt unlocked but was having trouble opening the door.. I didn’t realize that there was a chain lock at the top and luckily that stopped me from possibly going on a one way trip to the bottom of the gorge.

Most of my sleepwalking I remember, it is like a dream and then I wake up and realize that I was acting out my dream. For example, I have two 3ft tall statues of Jesus and Mother Mary in my room, I had this dream a year that I have hugging Mary and Jesus, I woke up with my arms around both of the statues… haha. I just had to laugh and go back to bed. I think that people that have these are perfectly normal and just need to understand that everyone is unique for a reason. However..if you are violent or have been lighting fires, ect.. then you need to seek some help so you won’t harm yourself or others accidently.. ie: Medicine. I also heard recently that sleepwalkers may be doing that because they have breathing sleep disorders (I forgot what that is called when you stop breathing for a few moments while your asleep).

Anyways.. just have a sense of humor with this and enjoy yourself. I don’t mind telling ppl that I am a sleepwalker, in fact sometimes that is the thing that will break the ice and create laughter regarding prior things ie: escaping into the grand canyon with nothing on except for my boxer shorts.. haha.. that would have been real great in the morning.. God only knows where I would have woken up!

I have been sleep walking on a regular basis. It started after the shock of Hurricane Ivan destroying our home and everything in it. I was in shock and my wife wound up in the hospital with a bad lung infection from living/sleeping in the rubble for 2 months before we received a FEMA trailer. [more..]
