PLM (Periodic Limb Movement Disorder)

My teenage son has severe PLM. It’s the most pitifult thing I’ve ever seen. He gets to sleep quickly but jerks all through the night and it looks as though he’s been in a war with his sheets all wrapped around him. He’s exhausted during the day, sleeping during class and anywhere he can (jerks in naps too). It pains me to watch it.

Because of this, it has an effect on his psyche. I would bet if I could get him quality sleep that he would feel much better mentally. Of course, he doesn’t know that he wakes a billion times a night. I do though because I can’t sleep just thinking of him in there not sleeping. Anyway, he was diagnosed with sleep apnea, but I truly believe it’s the PLM that’s hurting him the most. We’re trying Requip and hoping that it will work. Desperate measures. It’s been 3 years of torture.

  • RLS, Lower Back Pain, IBS - by SVB - (Fri, Sep 14 2007)
I find that lying in bed on a flat, frozen bag, gel pack used to keep lunch boxes cool, placed under the lower back just below the belt line helps to releave my symptoms, until I can fall asleep. It will thaw in about 30 minutes. The cold isn’t intense and my symptoms ease in a few minutes. [more..]
