REM BEHAVIOR DISORDER

by: DB on Thu, Jan 17 2008

I lived with this sleep disorder for over 25 years until I researched sleep disorders and found mine. I take 100milligrams of zoloft every night before bed and I have no more problems. As a young boy I slept walk and I eventually grew out of that and developed rem behavior disorder.

The acting out always happened in the first hour of sleep and was always violent in nature. I have punched holes in walls and smashed out windows, threw dressers and so on. My heart rate was through the roof during these events. I live a fairly normal life. I am a Police Officer and deal with stress quite well. As soon as I would lay down to sleep the problems would start.

I am 38 years old and my problem began soon after sleep walking at the age of maybe 8. I did not seek help til I was in my 30’s. As a young boy I was very fearful of going to bed at night for fear of an intruder entering our home and killing me or my family. I never been abused physically or sexually and lived a very normal childhood. In my early 20’s I did develope diplopia (double vision) unk neurological eye disorder. Im not sure if the sleep and eye problem are related. I never wet the bed as a young boy either. I am told that I am very laid back and not easily tempered. I have never had any depression issues either. I just wanted to share my story.

Hi, Preface: this is a long message, I apologize in advance, but maybe it will help someone. I have read the other postings today as a result of having episodes the last few nights where I have managed to tear the ligament off my knee cap again, so I am sitting here with a soft cast (I have a huge collection of casts - anyone need one?) on hoping I can get better by New Years cause i have plans to go to a concert, which i want to do really badly. But who knows if i will get better by then. [more..]
