Not being able to fall asleep before 2 or 3 AM and then of course having a tough time getting up early the next morning. Being aware that I had to get up early the next morning even made matters worse. That would get me all worked up and I would fall asleep later and completely exhausted. As a teenager I missed early classes regularly and always had to come up with some kind of interesting new reason why I was not present. I couldn’t just tell them that I got up late. Somehow I succeeded to graduate from the HBS (one of the higher forms of secondary education in the Dutch system-before 1968). Lucky for me at the university where I continued my education many courses could be attended either in the morning or sometimes in the afternoon or evening. After successfully completing my study at the university I started my career and wondered how I would manage to get through this phase of my life. I have worked at the Department of Education as an educational psychologist head of the section, Educational Guidance. I am now 60 and retired. In all the years I worked, the Department of Education has had 4 consecutive Directors. For some odd reason they all “accepted” the situation that I worked a “different shift. I must be a lucky person that four different directors tolerated my starting hour and I am grateful to each of them. I can imagine that many people would have lost their jobs in the meantime. And then to think of it that I just recently learned that my condition has a name ..DSPS. Comments
