To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download Lost My Shift Work Job To DSPS I was employed by a company for almost three years till I was fired for having 11 lates under my belt. We rotated shifts every 2 weeks. 6am to 2:30pm then 2:30pm to 1am. We all know if you get off at 1am and you suffer from DSPS there is no going to sleep as soon as you get home. You need time to wind down. On nightshift I fell asleep when the morning shift was arriving at work. In my first year I was written up 3 times for only 4 lates. Every 4 hours late or 4 lates is a write up. The first time I was late was 4 hours. Did I ever feel like crap. Worst part about it is I lived right across the street from work. Ive never been harrased so bad in m life. Often when I was on dayshifts I would fall asleep at work. Pretty dangerous in a manufacturing environment. After my first year I decided I couldnt take the harrasment nomore. I went to the doctor for sleeping pills. This is when I found out Ive been suffering from this disorder my whole life. He was reluctant to perscribe me anything. I was persistent and we did some experimenting. No pills seemed to work. All they gave me was more vivid dreams and nightmares. They made me tired but still unable to sleep. I tried numerous relaxation techniques. Even experimented with light therapy. How do you wake up to stare at a light. If you could wake up to do that it wouldnt be such a problem waking up for work would it. Most times when Id be switching back to the 6am shifts I would try to stay up all night. If I made it through work without falling asleep and could manage to stay away from the bed when I finished work I was able to fall asleep at a decent time. Even when I did that if I stayed up past 11pm I wouldnt be able to fall asleep again. In my next year of work I was late 4 times again. I only was written up once though because I managed to keep my lates under 4 hours total. This is when work realized I might be telling the truth about my problem and asked for a doctors recomendation. I got a letter from my doctor for work and they put me on a straight day shift. Which we all know this is going to be almost as hard as rotating shifts. 6am is early. I wanted the dayshift because I found myself really depressed working nights. I really tried to improve I got myself into a pattern and I was up every day at 5am. Even on weekends. I went to bed at the same time everynight and was always out the second I layed down. I had never felt so good. I never once fell asleep at work again. Nomore struggling to wake up in the mornings. It took 5 months of dayshifts before I was late. Im proud I was 1 minute late for car trouble. In the next 4 months I was late one more time because I stayed up late at an event on a weekend which messed my pattern up. After 9 months the decided I never made improvements so the made me rotate shifts again. 9 months of straight dayshifts is equivalent to 1 1/2 years of days when you are rotating shifts. I was late 2 times compared to 6. I felt there was an improvement. Well I worked 2 weeks of the night shift. I fell asleep at 4am alarm went off at 5am. I dont even remember if I slept thru it for 4 hours or if I woke up to shut it off. (my alarm is wired to my stereo and a speaker is beside my bed). I ended up phoning in 4 hours late. The next day I was called into the office about 8am. They asked me what happened I told them I got out of routine. I was sent back to work. At 2pm 30 minutes before my shift ended they called me back into the office and terminated my employment. I worked my a*s off for this company for close to 3 years and had 11 lates. I am fortunate that in all of this all I lost was my employment as opposed to some fingers if I had an accident from falling asleep on the job. I recently was denied employment insurance because they feel I was misconductful and did not take the adequate steps to insure I wasnt late. You need 900 hours to qualify and I have more then 5000.
