Tired of comments and insinuations

I am a night owl and always have been. As an artist it is the most creative time for me and I have the most clarity and effectiveness. My family thinks that it is by choice and while it suits me and has appeal, if I try to go to sleep earlier as they suggest I just end up staring at the ceiling and wasting hours of time. Once I was criticized for getting up in the morning and asking my family to keep it quiet. If it had been night time and I was keeping them from sleeping by being noisy they would think nothing of it. I hate that people notice the time on my e-mails and realize that I am up working early a.m. I never realized that until it was mentioned to me. Now I just keep them as drafts until later. My mother even has intimated that my being a night owl is some kind of character flaw because I am out of step with the rest of society. She told me that when I am at my father’s house I should keep their schedule. Does this mean that when they come visit I can ask that they stay up late and sleep late? Everyone seems to want to celebrate diversity but only if it fits their definition. By the way, I am highly educated and high functioning. I have conformed to the norm of daytime hours when I had to get my kids to school etc. It just is not optimal for me. So why am I being judged for my circadian rhythm because it is different?

People just do not get it, for them it's simply a matter of 'forcing' yourself to go to bed earlier and then everything will be all right. They don't...Read

- The best news ever. - by Anna - (Fri, Sep 28 2007)
For years I’ve fought frequent bouts of depression guilt, stress and all of the stuff that goes along with being considered “lazy” and having issues with work and school due to my “awkward” sleep habits. So many times in my life I’ve been told to “Go to bed earlier!”

Its always interesting to be researching “Why is sleeping always a fight in both directions?” I googled “reversed sleep schedule” and more or less here I am. I found out what the name was yesterday. Yesterday? After calling it out in all ways but name. Not the psychiatrist or the counselor had any clue what I was talking about.

I am 46 years old and have lived with dspd all of my life. I didn’t know it was a condition until my 19 year old son researched it. He has the same disorder and was tired of not being able to take early college classes and function like the rest of his friends. Luckily, our family doctor’s daughter has dspd and is currently being treated for it.

- Better jobs for night owls - by Christina - (Wed, Sep 19 2007)
As those of us with DSPS/DSPD know all too well, the main obstacle we face throughout our lives is the dearth of choices for occupations with late morning, afternoon, or evening start times.
