Wow, I’ve found a home!

Hi again,
Just read through the whole 3 months, and boy can I relate! “If you’d just go to bed earlier!” Must have heard that 100,000 times! Now I’m in an “Active Adult Community” in AZ and seems everybody gets up at like 5 am because that’s when it’s cooler; and then they want to have luncheons @ 11 or 11:30! I’ve just finished breakfast!

One day they scheduled a function at 9 am. So I set my two alarms and tv alarms at the highest volume and asked my next door neighbor who I was driving to the function to call me at 8. Well, after calling me 3x she was afraid I’d died or something and used her key. She wears hearing aids but didn’t have them on - she said the radio and tv volume about blasted her out of the room! I wonder sometimes if people think I drink or am some kind of drug addict!

Well anyway gang, soo glad I found you. I e-mailed U of Ca San Diego because they did a “Night Owl study” in 2004. Want to see what they found? I know they were looking for a genetic link and one of you (I think) mentioned that somebody had I.D.’d a mutated gene related to DSPS. What is Chronotherapy? Well, now I’ve really over done it–it’s almost 5 am here and I’m getting e-mails from all my “lark” friends and family on the east coast –and I had so many things I had to do today! “Been there, done that” Right?

Take care,

CP

  • T Night Owl in the womb - by Karen - (Mon, Aug 27 2007)
I had just posted my “story” when I read yours. I am 47 and have all of the classic symptoms of ADD I have always stayed up until 2 am or so and cannot function at all in the mornings. This has been EXTREMELY difficult as a teacher and in getting my own children safely to school. [more..]
  • This is ME - by Karen - (Mon, Aug 27 2007)
I’ve felt guilty all of my life because of my lack of focus and ability to function in the mornings. I am a teacher, and I beg to have 1st period planning, because I stumble around and literally don’t know what I am doing until about 10 am. [more..]
  • DSPS - by Sara Nicole - (Wed, Aug 22 2007)
I almost burst into tears when I found this. I’m not alone! For as long as I can remember, I have been unable to fall asleep at night. Sleepovers at friends houses were nightmares - laying there awake in a strange house while everyone else slept soundly… I wanted to cry. [more..]
  • Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome - by Tanya - (Wed, Aug 08 2007)
I just read the articles on this site on DSPS, which I never heard of before, and it really describes what is wrong with me. I am 31, and for 6+ years I haven’t been able to fall asleep at a normal time. Usually I fall asleep between 3am and 6am. I need a lot of sleep and cannot wake up after less than 8 hours. As a result I feel lot of guilt for my “bad habits”, being “lazy”, and people say I’m undisciplined for going to bed and getting up late. I’m self-employed, so that helps, but it still costs me time I could be working with clients. [more..]
  • Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS) - by LKP - (Tue, Aug 07 2007)
This “syndrome” is a problem because not everyone can work shift work. I am a school psychologist I must work when everyone else does. I’m a high achiever and wanted a profession that I have a great aptitude for, however mine, like many major professions, does not allow night and afternoon work schedules. [more..]
  • Night Owl in the Womb - by CP - (Thu, Aug 02 2007)
I’ve been a night owl since the womb. My mother claims I would keep her awake all night. Sunrise is often my signal to go to bed. I was lucky enough to always have jobs where I worked the late shift at least one day a week. Then I got a job teaching at the night school. My class ended about 10:50 –I was in 7th heaven. [more..]
